Innovation at Al Ostad focuses on bespoke pallet design, not just standard euro pallets

Industry relies on pallets, but what might happen in future? Dubai based Al Ostad Pallet Factory’s Managing Director Alex George offers a deep dive into his Dubai pallet factory’s future, covering sustainable changes as well as experimentation with AI and robotics, in this special contribution for LogisticsGulf.com
Pallets are here to stay, and we have a strong commitment to the future of the sector, evidenced by the investment in our huge new purpose-built facility in Dubai Industrial City.
It is fair to say that pallets remain the backbone of logistics, with more than 200 million produced annually in the GCC – a figure that we confidently expect to double in the next decade, especially given the region’s reputation as the entrepôt of the world, and a global hub for the logistics sector.
While more traditional wooden pallets are still the dominant manufacturing style, we are seeing a rise in demand for plastic and corrugated pallets, particularly in industries which require a higher level of hygiene, such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and retail.
Innovation
Innovation at Al Ostad focuses on bespoke pallet design, not just standard euro pallets. We pride ourselves on the ability to create pallets of various sizes and configurations to meet our client’s unique shipping requirements.
And to stay ahead of the industry curve, we are investing in automation and robotics to improve efficiency, while balancing cost effectiveness in a labour-intensive region.
With more than 25 years of expertise in the timber and pallet industry, the factory is now something of a regional benchmark, blending practical efficiency with technology.
Circularity and pallet loss
One of the biggest issues that we as a sector must continue to address is pallet loss and circularity. Industry studies suggest 10-30% of pallets in circulation are ‘lost’ each year, either misplaced, broken beyond use, or never returned.
Relocating to Dubai Industrial City has strengthened our operational resilience by providing access to larger, purpose-built warehousing and logistics infrastructure. The move enables us to optimise inventory management, streamline raw material storage, and shorten delivery times.
Situated within one of Dubai’s most strategically connected industrial hubs, the new facility allows smoother coordination with suppliers and customers, minimising the risk of supply chain disruption caused by transport delays or capacity constraints.
While we continue to explore creating renewable energy from our production waste, we currently repurpose production waste into usable by-products for livestock farms and stables, and we work with sustainable forestry suppliers to ensure responsible sourcing of timber.
Future-proof factory
The new 8,000-square metre factory is designed with seamless production flow and next-generation lighting, allowing for 24/7 output.
We have adopted a masterplan of careful, phased implementation of automation, which, of course, requires extensive testing to account for any unforeseen scenarios. Interestingly, recent trials using robotic timber placement and nailing showed that humans still outperform machines on speed, so while we are ready for automation, the technology is not quite ready for us. Both AI and robotics remain under review for production and administrative functions.
As automation advances, the data it generates will power predictive analytics, demand forecasting, and supply-chain optimisation – key tools for long-term efficiency and resilience
Making it in the Emirates
Al Ostad Pallet Factory’s long history in the UAE means we are very much an integral part of the nation’s manufacturing ecosystem. Reliable pallets are, after all, essential to the movement of finished goods.
We wholly support the Make it in the Emirates initiative – the national initiative led by the UAE’s Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT), as part of its broader Operation 300 billion industrial strategy.
We align closely with its goal to promote and accelerate domestic manufacturing, encouraging investors and innovators to develop, scale, and export products made in the UAE. Our choice of location within Dubai Industrial City reflects that alignment: it sits at the heart of the UAE’s industrialisation agenda and offers direct connectivity to Al Maktoum International Airport, supporting both regional and global logistics.
People, skills, and community
At the heart of every successful company lies its people and their skills. Our 50-plus team benefits from continuous training and development opportunities, ensuring they remain tech-savvy as automation expands across the facility.
We cultivate a culture of empowerment and balance, underpinned by the belief that technology should work with people, not against them. In the wider community, we supply free packing materials to humanitarian aid agencies, and we see long-term investment in people and innovation as the surest route to resilience and sustainable growth – for Al Ostad, for our industry, and for the UAE’s industrial future.
