Coolant, engine oil, and brake fluid perform key protective and safety-related functions
Modern vehicles are equipped with efficient thermal management systems. Nevertheless, they still rely on operating fluids that perform their functions reliably. Engine oil, coolant, transmission oil, and brake fluid each fulfil different roles: they lubricate, cool, protect against corrosion, transmit forces, and help ensure that components remain functional even under high thermal loads.
Before longer holiday journeys, it is therefore advisable to take a close look at fluid levels, driving conditions, and change intervals.
If the coolant is ageing, mixed incorrectly, or present in insufficient quantity, cooling performance can be impaired. Especially in high outside temperatures, traffic jams, or towing operation, this increases the risk of overheating. Regular checks and the use of a coolant that is suitable for the vehicle are therefore important elements of summer maintenance.
High thermal load
Engine oil and transmission oil are also subjected to greater stress in summer. High temperatures, long operating times, and stop-and-go traffic put additional strain on the oil film, additive systems, and oxidation stability. Engine oil must maintain its lubricating properties even under high thermal load, reduce friction, and protect components against wear.
In automatic, dual-clutch, or manual transmissions, high loads and long journeys can also increase temperature and fluid stress. A suitable transmission oil helps maintain shift comfort, power transmission, and component protection even under demanding conditions.
Brake fluid is particularly relevant to safety. When vehicles are fully loaded, driven in mountainous terrain, or used for towing, the braking system has to work significantly harder.
Functional safety
For workshops, checking the brake fluid is therefore a key part of the summer check. Replacing it in good time helps ensure the functional safety of the braking system, even on demanding journeys.
‘For many drivers, a holiday journey begins with packing the boot. For workshops, it should ideally begin earlier with a targeted look at coolant, oil, and brake fluid,’ noted Konstantin Gaab, Managing Director, MANNOL / SCT Germany.
Since its foundation in Germany in 1993 by Juri Sudheimer, MANNOL has stood for innovation, quality, and fair value for money. The entire production process is carried out from a single source—from manufacturing to filling in metal containers and plastic containers. MANNOL products are sold globally and are now available in over 130 countries worldwide.
