Dubai Customs inspectors at Dubai International Airport foiled an attempt to smuggle 460 grams of 24-carat raw gold, according to an official press statement.
The gold had been melted and shaped into thin rods, then professionally embedded inside the rubber frame and inner structure of a passenger’s suitcase, making it appear to be part of the suitcase’s original components in an attempt to hide it from inspection equipment.
Drawing on their experience in reading and analysing these signs, the inspectors searched the suitcase thoroughly, which led them to extract the gold rods hidden inside the rubber frame and inner structure of the suitcase.
Concealment methods
The rods were found to be made of 24-carat raw gold and had been professionally prepared to match the suitcase’s original components, reflecting the continued development of concealment methods used by smuggling networks.
Khalid Ahmed, Director of Passenger Operations at Dubai Customs, said the seizure reflects the extent to which concealment and smuggling methods have evolved.
“Dubai Customs is committed to continued investment in developing inspectors’ capabilities through specialised training programmes that keep pace with new concealment and smuggling methods,” he concluded.
